I am a big fan of place settings on a dining room table...I think it makes the room look at bit more "finished." I wanted to add some...just did not want to spend a ton of money on them. Here is a picture of the dining room table without:
I bought a 4 pack of napkins from Target (to go with the tablecloths that I used for curtains) for $9.99 and cut them in half so I only ended up needing one pack for 8 place settings. Then used a little silver spray paint on some gold chargers that I already had and added white plates from The Dollar Tree (can you beat $8 for 8 plates??????)
Just for fun, here is our dining room when we first moved into this house. Yikes. It has definitely undergone a few changes since last February.
And after a little wall painting, rub n' buffing, picture hanging, furniture painting, table setting, and curtain making (WHEW!) - here is the current state of our dining room:

I know this is a really old post... but I wanted to tell you my before and after looks kinda like yours!!! Thanks for your boldness and depth of colour, and your courage for doing it yourself!!! I love my dining room!
