This is what happened. I woke up Friday morning and had 2 thoughts:
1. "I don't have enough room on our dining room gallery wall to add new photos of Chase when he is born."
2. "I think higher molding in the dining room would look nice."
My poor husband. I told him Friday morning that I thought we should make a few changes. Our neighbor stopped by Friday night, and I am sure she was wondering why we were tearing down perfectly good molding.
I will call this a "pregnancy induced hormonal spur of the moment" decision. Here is the dining room before.
And after.
We put a 3" picture frame shelf all the way around the room and now there is extra space to add more pictures when the little guy arrives. This project made me feel a little crazy because I did not think through it at all when I started ripping stuff off the walls. But I love the way it turned out :)

You are HILARIOUS! I love your pregnancy hormones! It paid off! Looks great!
Please bring your pregnancy hormones over to my place!
Is there anything that can't be done by a pregnant woman? Awesome changes!
Wow, Anne! This is amazing. I love the heigh it adds to the room!!
very impressed by your hormones. I agree with Danielle...bring them over to my place :)
Jump for joy! This is awesome.
Wow- amazing transformation! Great ideas, and it look wonderful! I love the new gallery walls. And the color combo of gray and yellow is gorgeous! How exciting that baby is almost here. :)
Simply AMAZING, the change adds so much more interest and I love all the frames sitting on top!
You are so right! I think the taller moulding does look better... although the other looked great too! I'm looking forward to reading through your archives! Glad to have found you too!
If *that* is what your hormones induce, then you should DEFINITELY keep them around! It's mah-velous, dah-ling...It looks so great, I think it was a stroke of genius. And yay, more room for baby Chase!!!
This is fantastic, The family photos are perfect on there.

It looks fabulous! Hopefully when I get pregnant, my pregnancy hormones will help me make such amazing decorating decision! :)
LOVE IT!!! Looks amazing!
I love it! But I'm cracking up that you are redoing your dining room right before giving birth! Ha! I love how it turned out- and the pops of yellow are so fun!
You are nuts. I like the dining room in the before picture and even if you like it better in the after picture not sure it is so different as to warrant all that work.
In any event the dining room is gorgeous. I really like the grey and yellow together. I like that you have all those pictures up. It adds a real personal touch to the place and you did a great job of organizing it. So beautiful....really!
I saw you featured over at Centsational Girl...you are one brave girl to change your molding. It came out awesome and you were very right...it looks even better. I am your latest follower. Would love for you to stop by and say hi. Hope to see you over at my blog. Looking forward to keeping up with yours.
It's awesome, plain and simple. I give you a ton of credit for taking the plunge and I think it gives it a relaxed and modern feel. Bravo!!
This room is incredibly beautiful! I love what it was before, but now it is WOW!
Could you tell us what color that is on your walls? I love it! And while I'm asking, what is the yellow on the breakfront?
What a beautiful room - and I love the new higher molding, too!
Thanks for all the sweet comments :)
Eileen - the wall paint color is called Dark Ash (by Behr @ Home Depot). I wish I could tell you the name of the yellow paint but it is a bunch of different paint colors all mixed together so that probably wont help too much :)
This is incredible! How did I miss it? I also love the color of your painted cabinet.. it's perfect in the room:)
Very useful and Great blog. Thanks for sharing..
Nice makeover. I wish I had your hormonal inspiration when I was pregnant lol
I LOVE this!
Visiting from Debbiedoo's
BEAUTIFUL! Love every inch of it. The color combo is amazing!
I was wondering if you have spray painted any of those silver frames and what paint you used?
It looks great! I remember those hormones, they caused me to re-tile my master bath at 8 months along!!!
My hubs and I have been talking about this technique for a bit. Can you share your height and spacing measurements? Thanks!!!
Katie - the total height is about 6ft. We spaced each board about 19-21" apart - they are not exact because we tried to aviod the electric outlets to save our selves from extra work. I hope that helps!
About the frames - I actually ended up using "rub'n'buff" in silver leaf to "paint" a few of them. The other ones I purchased at the Dollar Tree and Target.
Oh this is beautiful! I love the unity of your portraits with black and white images and unified framed in various neutral tones. I have shared your post on my photography FB page!

Your room is beautiful! I have to ask about your table. Where did you get it? We have been looking for a table for a while now and cannot find one we like. Yours is perfect!
Thanks,
Janelle
Hi, Janelle - the table and chairs are from World Market about 4 years ago - they always have cute dining room furniture though! Thanks for the kind words!
This is beautiful - thanks for sharing. I've been planning a Board and Batten look for my family room for over six months now. I have three elementary-age kids, so finding the time to do it is insane. You're smart to do it before baby #2 arrives.
My walls are textured - I'm guessing your walls are smooth? Dang. I think I have to actually put the board on the walls. And with that, I'm thinking of staining them instead of painting--did I mention having two active boys?
More to think about - thanks again for sharing!
Hi, Shelley - yep, our walls were smooth (well, about as smooth as we could make them after ripping stuff off!) :) Sounds like you have your hands full! Thanks for your sweet compliment!
Girl, there is never anything that would convince me to do that, but I'm so glad you can . . . and that you're my friend. We definitely need to get together on some ideas for my dining room sometime soon. : )
Saw your project over at Centsational Girl. I like that there's now a height difference between the molding and the table. The room has a more sophisticated look. And great idea to add the picture rail so you can change things out whenever you want. I'm looking to add board and batten to my own home, so I'll pin this as inspiration.
I LOVE it! It was serious and museum-like before and it's clean and modern now. bravo!
I'm new here but I love this! I was real nervous when I saw those first photos of you ripping down the moulding (and I hadn't read the beginning of the post) - I love the end result!
It's my first time here...love your dining room. Your husband sure is a good sport! Can't get over the difference. The gray and yellow are stunning. Well done. I'm a new follower.
Your dining room is BEAUTIFUL!!!!
I love the picture ledge and the grey color on the wall.
Very pretty. And some of my favorite colors!
Hi Anne,
The board and batten is stunning! I am absolutely loving the dark wall color you have and the photo display!
Jean
Beautiful! I love the feeling of your room. Well done! (And I understand the crazy projects one undertakes while pregnant -- been there, done that!)
Anne, your dining room is beautiful! I love the color, and the board and batten trim with the picture ledge looks amazing. Thanks so much for linking up to Roomspiration!
love the extended moulding! your room can really handle that. so jealous, lol! love the pops of yellow, too.
Hi Anne...
I'm just coming over from the Roomspiration Blog party. This is my first visit to your blog.
Ohhh my goodness...I just adore your dining room, my friend! I love, love, LOVE your gray, yellow/gold, and white color palette! In fact, I have been contemplating these very same colors for the living area in my home! It's such an inspiration to see your dining room! It's GORGEOUS!!! I loved the height of the moulding before but after seeing the "raised moulding"...I'm just blown away! I love it!!! Raising the height of the moulding really gave your beautiful dining room an entirely different look!
Thank you so much for sharing your fabulous dining room with us...this was such a treat for me!
Warmest autumn wishes,
Chari @Happy To Design
I think I may have commented before, but this room is worth a double-comment. I absolutely love your color scheme and the board and batten is to die for!
Now I really want to repaint my dining room after seeing yours! This is the most beautiful dining room! {Shhhh...it's my favorite!} Wow! Seriously, it is stunning! The color pallet, the placement, the furniture, the gallery wall, sigh...it all blends together famously. I'm sooo glad you shared this via Roomspiration. It has inspired me! Glad to meet you as well.
I'm seriously obsessed... Love it!!!
I love how the B and B bring your eyes up! It looks amazing, and such a great idea to put pictures on the ledge. I would love to do this on my staircase landing. Thanks for the inspiration.
this is prob a very stupid question, but did you nail the wood into the wall or use some sort of adhesive?
Hi, Debby. We used a nail gun to adhere the wood to the wall. Hope that helps!
Oh MY!!! Love this!!! Don't be surprised if it shows up verbatim in my home (don't worry, I'll change the photos :) )
I love this! We are planning a similar project and I was wondering what materials you used for the picture ledge. Did you also use cove moulding?
One more thing... What were the dimensions (thickness) of your materials? Absolutely stunning!
I ADORE your dining room! And I love the genius idea for your curtains!
