As I mentioned in my last post, Christopher and I are making a few changes in the kitchen. The first project on our list was to add height to the kitchen cabinets and extend them to the ceiling.
We started off by finding studs in the ceiling and nailing in several pieces of scrap wood squares for support.
12" wide strips of MDF nailed to the wood squares in the ceiling.
Then came the molding along the top.
A few coats of primer.
The original plan was to leave it white. But it just look a little washed out once it was all painted white. So we went with leftover gray paint that was sitting in the garage (Ashes by Behr - same color as in the office). We are going to re-paint the kitchen - I am thinking a lighter shade of this paint.
And excuse the backsplash disaster going on below. We removed the original tiles and are going to change it up a bit once the counters are replaced.
Here's to checking off project #1. Happy Sunday!

This is fantastic and I applaud your skills!! Janell
Wow! It looks so good! The grey is perfect- great job you two! And so cute your daughter on the counter:)
It looks beautiful! I love the idea of building up that empty space!
it looks so much better and will be so much easier to keep clean up there now! i always hate that over the cabinet grease that happens... we have soffits in this house, so no problem, but the last house i had to get up there with soft scrub a few times a year and it was nasty!
Wow, totally changes the look of the kitchen. I NEVER would have thought to do that. I really like the grey too, but I can imagine it a tad bit lighter too.
It looks wonderful! What a great idea. And happy anniversary!
Looks good! Love that gray color!

Looks great! We have the same cabinets and opening above them in our kitchen! I have always wanted to change that. Thanks for the great ideas! :)
Who knew what a huge difference that would make? It looks great and I've got it pinned, hoping to talk the hubs into helping me do this. Do you think us beginner DIY'ers could handle it?
Wow what a difference!
Look at you, busy gal! I can't believe how much Chase has changed...and poor little Ashlyn! I can't believe they still call it that, either...I mean, really??? The cabinets look *fantabulous*! I can't wait to see it with the new counters and backsplash! It's gonna be amaaaaaaazing!
That looks great!! I love that you painted it a light gray! Great job! You guys must be so pleased! Can't wait to see the rest of the space come together!!

Looks fantastic. We have exactly the same dreadful gap above our kitchen cupboards. This is a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing. x J
Loving the changes you're making to the kitchen. We have the same gaps above our cabinets. May I ask what changes you are making to the counters? We are in the beginning stages of renovating ours. Would love to bounce some ideas off of you! Thanks for sharing!
